Playground, an area in which pay exist or according to Marion-Webster.com "an arena of operation or activity." Consider the term play as in something having a little play in it, i.e. wiggle room, range or leeway. Insert this definition into the word playground. The term playground then becomes something different. It becomes an area where there is a margin for error. My work focuses on oral communication, and the playground within conversation. Communication is a necessary activity of exchanging information and meaning across space and time: the playground.
Often, it is our insecurities and egos that get in the way of our ability to deliver or receive a line of communication. Subsequently, individuals tend to regress to a childlike way of communicating, becoming eager and clumsy. Resulting in a panic need for affirmation, or bursting out fragrant untruths to save face. At this point, the playground becomes muddled with untimely messages that may or may not be received. In my observations, I find that effective communication is about more that just sending messages but rather an exchange of layered information; and being able to decode the informal factors of expression that are unique to each individual. It takes a mature and confident soul to be an expert communicator.
The term play is defined again in my work in its more commonly used definition: amusement or entertainment, to have fun. Play is a powerful catalyst for positive socialization. During childhood play, kids learn about verbal communication, body language, boundaries, cooperation and teamwork. As adults, we continue to build on these skills using play to break down barriers and improve our relationship with others.
This body of work is an adult sized communication playground. Designed for "simple" adult fun, that fosters communication in adults via the element of play. The work calls for interaction and facilitates an environment for adults to let loose of the insecurities that bind them. The playful interaction and relaxed setting allows for more open and honest communication. The playground is full of messages being exchanged across space and time. It is my intent to bring the importance of this exchange into a new perspective for my viewers.
